Sorry its been a while since last post, but I do have a good reason for the delay. First, I moved out of my apartment which means no internet, and then I went for a brief camping trip to the Pacific northwest (which was gorgeous).
When I returned I remembered a contest a good friend of mine had told me about. Fortunately, I was just in time to enter. Unfortunately, I had less than two days to write and mix a piece for the contest... so yay! Speed composing time!
Heres the gist of it: at this website called Zooppa.com, you can enter contests as a creative person (such as a composer!) to try and win prizes. This particular contest was to write music for a video game trailer. Specifically, for the upcoming Harry Potter video game for Xbox Kinnect.
The contest will be judged (and I quote):
25% - How well the music reflects the magic and adventure of Harry Potter
25% - How well the music epitomizes the fun and unique spirit of the game
25% - Production quality
25% - Originality
Those of you who know me know this is exactly what I want to be doing for a living, though this game is not exactly my usual cup of tea. With that in mind, I set out to write a 60-180 second piece of music to win cash prizes. Keep in mind I was not allowed to use any music already written, not even any of the scored melodies from the Harry Potter movies. Therefore, I wanted to imitate John Williams’ work form the first three movies, but not so closely that I would lose originality points. I feel I met a happy medium, especially in the second half of the piece. After much deliberation, I named the piece Harry Dreams of Hogwarts.
Now, on the off chance I win, I’m not allowed to post the music anywhere because it then becomes a work-for-hire and I won’t own it. So, I wont be posting the music here. I can however link you to it so you can go vote for me to win! So, what are you still doing here? Go vote! The music was due by today at 4PM, but voting is still in to see whose piece is the most awesome.
To be honest, I don't have the highest of hopes for my chances. Many of the composers on there seem to have some higher quality samples than I do, (I only used Logics built in samples for mine). But compositionally I can give em a run for their money; I bet none of them wrote their piece in two days! Who knows? Maybe my stuff is just what the judges are looking for!
