Amongst the papers, tests, study groups, concerts, recording sessions, and occasional all nighters that comprised my college career, I also interned at a TV studio. Specifically a small community station back home in the Mt. Shasta area. I did so because I wanted to diversify my experience in professional audio, especially given the job climate of today. Well, the experience paid off, and I’ve recently been hired on as a production assistant at a local TV studio.
The studio in question is KHSL and the job isn’t particularly glamorous, but it is a foot in the door (and that is a positive thing). The good news is that given time, there will be plenty of room to move up, though I am starting at the bottom; the better news is that I get to keep my job at Guitar Center (I do love working there!). I was told that I am overqualified for the position, so I do hope to move up quickly, but we all gotta pay our dues right? I hope that given time I'll get to be one of their audio editors.
So, the job starts tomorrow; I will report back once I’ve had some time with it!
Some folks have been urging me to get active in social media for the purposes of promoting myself. Although I’m not opposed to the matter, I did drag my feet at first; after all, how many social outlets must once person maintain? I do have some exciting ideas which I’ll be sharing soon, once I unveil my brand new facebook and twitter accounts.
This leads me to a mini-dilemma I’ve been having. When registering my Facebook account to link to this page, I discovered that “KVAudio” is the name of a speaker manufacturer. As a result, I’m looking into changing the name for my site (and subsequently the Twitter and Facebook I just created). Since I already have an email address ([email protected]), I’d like to stick to something close to that. Don’t worry about having trouble finding the site though; I’ll be sure to set up some kind of forwarding link. As soon as I stop being picky and settle on a name
In other news, a friend of mine was singing the “Inspector Gadget” theme song last week and I called him out on it, mostly because I’m fond of making fun of the piece for having only three lyrics: “Inspector,” “gadget” and “go.” He countered with a challenge for me to re-write the piece as a jazz tune. I’m not going to pretend to know much of anything about jazz, at least not compared to the other styles I’ve studied. I’ve sung with a jazz choir for three years, I’m familiar with jazz rhythms and instrumentation, and I occasionally listen to Miles Davis or Thelonious Monk. However I’ve never studied jazz theory, which as compared to traditional music theory is a completely different ball game. For reference, here is the original theme:

| All of that being said, I think I’ve gotten good at faking a jazz style. I’m sure educated jazz folks would rip it apart, but in less than two hours I had turned the original “Inspector Gadget” theme into this: Enjoy! -Kev |
